The Parenthesis Lady Beetle

Sometimes you might be out with a camera in the field and it won't be obvious to passersby just what it is you're photographing. Once this happened to me, a lady passing by asked, 'What could you be photographing over there?,' and when I answered 'Bugs,' she said 'Yecch!'

A lot of people have this attitude I think, but many insects are very beautiful (or at least interesting) and what's more they're loads of fun to take pictures of. The downside is you do need some specialized equipment like a macro lens (expensive) or some tubes (less expensive). You can also use a close-up filter, some of which are very high quality. You'll also probably need a flash.

If you're wondering a Parenthesis Lady Beetle is not a ladybug exactly but it's in the same family. For a more detailed analysis consult your local ornithologist.

Another note: while you might think bugs are everywhere, the good ones can be difficult to find in the confines of Toronto because all the parks are sprayed with insecticide at various times of the year, mostly to keep down the mosquito population (I'm guessing). That doesn't mean there are no bugs, it just means you have to really look sometimes.
